Summary Sent to Finance Ministry for Standardizing Salaries of Vice Chancellors of Public Universities

Karachi: The Federal Higher Education Commission has sent a summary to the Federal Ministry of Finance for the approval of a standardized annual salary package for Vice Chancellors across the country.

According to the summary, the salary for the final year of a Vice Chancellor’s tenure will exceed 1.5 million rupees, while in the first year, the salary will be 1,026,000 rupees. The salary will increase in subsequent years: 1,129,000 rupees in the second year, 1,242,000 rupees in the third year, and 1,366,000 rupees in the fourth year.

In a circular issued by Zia-ul-Qium, Executive Director of the Higher Education Commission, it was stated that this salary package will be acceptable to all Vice Chancellors/Rectors/Heads, appointed through the search committee process outlined in their respective acts/ordinances.

The salary package will be approved by the respective governments’ finance divisions and the chancellors of public sector universities in Pakistan, with final approval from the President of Pakistan.

Following the federal government’s review of professor salaries under the tenure track system, the salary package will be increased. Housing rent and utilities will only be covered if university-managed accommodation is not provided by the current Vice Chancellor/ Rector/Head.

The letter stated that since this salary package includes all allowances, no additional allowances will be given to Vice Chancellors/Rectors/Heads of public sector universities. The salary package will not be affected by budget increases from federal or provincial governments, and the commission will review the salary package periodically.

It is noted that the term for Vice Chancellors is five years in federal universities, four years in Sindh, and three years in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.
