Karachi Mayor Announces Action Against Contractors for Negligence in Road Construction

Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab stated that the situation in the city is under control after the recent rainfall, with all underpasses and main roads cleared.

During a city tour, Murtaza Wahab told Geo News that drainage operations are ongoing in areas where water has accumulated.

He noted that all underpasses in the city are clear, although there is some water in a few streets, where drainage is still being carried out.

The mayor also addressed rumors, saying, “It was propagated that Tariq Road and Shahrah-e-Quaideen were submerged, and Khudadad Colony was underwater, but during my visit, I found no water there.”

He acknowledged some issues in Gulshan-e-Maymar and Manghopir areas, adding that the rain has also damaged city roads.

Mayor Wahab admitted that the city’s roads were damaged by the rain and announced that action would be taken against contractors who were negligent in road construction.

The recent rains have exposed the poor quality of road construction in Karachi.

It is important to note that the rainfall in Karachi this year has not been heavy enough to cause urban flooding, yet many old and new roads were so poorly constructed that even a little water made them unusable.

For example, the road from Godhra Chowk to Rashid Minhas Road now resembles a rural area. On the other hand, the Garden Police Headquarters road and M.A. Jinnah Road are also suffering from poor conditions, causing traffic disruptions.

This issue is not limited to one area; several places like Malir, Shah Faisal Colony, North Nazimabad, and Model Colony are facing similar road conditions.

It is worth mentioning that intermittent heavy rainfall continues in various parts of Karachi, leading to the closure of educational institutions in the city today.

The Meteorological Department has warned of a potential cyclone forming along Sindh’s coastal belt, which could result in heavy rainfall in Karachi and other districts of Sindh.
