Judicial Commission Meeting Not Postponed to Facilitate Government’s Judicial Package: Reema Omer

The minutes of the Judicial Commission meeting and Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa’s letter refute media speculation that the Chief Justice postponed the Judicial Council meeting to facilitate the government’s judicial package.

Lawyer Reema Omer, in a thread on X, addressed the speculation circulating in the media, stating that the meeting minutes and the Chief Justice’s recent letter contradict this claim.

Explaining further, she noted that the minutes were published after the Judicial Commission meeting, stating that the Law Minister requested postponement during the meeting because the government was considering amendments to Article 175-A, which pertains to the powers and composition of the Judicial and Parliamentary Commissions.

Following Justice Afridi’s recommendation and the Commission’s perspective, the meeting scheduled for May 3 was postponed. A close examination of the meeting minutes clarifies Reema Omer’s point.

Specifically, the minutes mention that, initially, the Federal Law Minister requested the Commission to defer the meeting as the federal government was considering a proposed amendment to Article 175-A of the Constitution.

It should be noted that the Judicial Commission meeting has been rescheduled for September 13.

According to sources, the Judicial Commission will review the rules for judge appointments in the upcoming meeting, which will be chaired by the Chairman of the Judicial Commission, Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa.

Justice Mansoor Ali Shah and other members are also expected to attend the meeting.
