Imran Khan’s Cabinet Gave Relief to IPPs: Awais Leghari

Islamabad: Federal Minister of Energy Awais Leghari accused Imran Khan’s government of providing relief to Independent Power Producers (IPPs).

Speaking on Geo News’ program “Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Ke Saath,” Awais Leghari stated that Imran Khan’s cabinet gave relief to IPPs after the 2019 Muhammad Ali Report, deliberately wasting a significant opportunity.

He said that the PTI government possibly wasted this great opportunity intentionally, and the current situation is not favorable for the IPPs, the public, or the country.

Awais Leghari mentioned that the public could soon hear good news regarding IPP matters. Renegotiations with IPPs could provide relief of up to Rs 600 billion to consumers, and negotiations are ongoing with all power plants that were established.

Awais Leghari’s Response to Aseefa Bhutto’s Criticism

Responding to Aseefa Bhutto’s criticism regarding prolonged power outages, Awais Leghari said that prolonged load-shedding is occurring on feeders where electricity theft is common, which is due to the poor performance of distribution companies (DISCOs) and the provincial government’s lack of control.

Earlier, during the question hour in the National Assembly, Aseefa Bhutto questioned why load-shedding continued for up to 18 hours despite the government’s claims of surplus electricity.
