Former Police Officer Ordered to Be Arrested for Taking a 20-Rupee Bribe 34 Years Ago

A 34-year-old bribery case has caused sleepless nights for a former police constable in India.

According to Indian media reports, a court in the state of Bihar has ordered the arrest of a former police constable accused of taking a 20-rupee bribe from a woman transporting vegetables at Saharsa Railway Station in 1990.

The report states that the incident occurred on May 6, 1990, when police constable Suresh Prasad Singh was on duty at Saharsa Railway Station. He stopped Seeta Devi, a resident of Mahesh Khunt, as she was carrying a basket of vegetables on the station platform.

The constable allegedly took a 20-rupee bribe from the woman in exchange for allowing her to carry the basket of vegetables. However, the station in-charge, who was present at the time, caught the constable red-handed and had him arrested.

Later, the constable was granted bail, but the case continued. Since 1999, he had been absent from court hearings, leading to the cancellation of his bail bond and the issuance of an arrest warrant. Several raids were conducted to apprehend him, but he remained at large.

Recently, the case took a new turn when an investigation into Suresh Prasad Singh’s service records revealed that he had provided a false address and his actual residence was in another village.

Following this revelation, a special court judge directed the Bihar police to ensure the former constable’s arrest and ordered that the accused be presented in court as soon as possible.
