First Polio Case in Gaza Reported After 25 Year

Gaza: The first polio case in 25 years has been reported in the Gaza region of occupied Palestine.

According to Gaza’s Ministry of Health, the polio case was identified in the Deir al-Balah area, involving a 10-month-old child who had not received any polio vaccinations.

UNICEF had previously detected the polio virus in samples taken from Khan Younis and Deir al-Balah. In response, the United Nations has called for a 7-day ceasefire in Gaza to allow for polio vaccination efforts. The UN stated that the confirmation of the polio case in Gaza poses a threat to both Gaza and neighboring countries.

The Palestinian resistance group Hamas has welcomed the UN agencies’ call for a 7-day ceasefire to conduct an anti-polio campaign.

It is noteworthy that since October 7, 2023, the number of Palestinian martyrs has exceeded 40,000, with over 92,000 injured.
