Five-Member Commission Established to Investigate Enforced Disappearances in Bangladesh

A five-member commission has been formed in Bangladesh to investigate cases of enforced disappearances, headed by retired High Court Judge Moinul Islam Chowdhury.

According to Bangladeshi media, the commission will investigate cases of individuals who were forcibly disappeared by intelligence agencies and law enforcement agencies during the tenure of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The commission will investigate enforced disappearances that occurred between January 1, 2010, and August 5, 2024. Human rights organizations estimate that more than 700 individuals were forcibly disappeared during this period.

The five-member commission is expected to complete its report within 45 days and submit it to the interim government.

The commission will also investigate the actions of the Bangladeshi Border Force, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), and other paramilitary units.

It is worth noting that the United States had imposed sanctions on Bangladesh’s Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) over issues related to enforced disappearances.
